Agarkar took charge of the selection committee in 2023 and his tenure was extended for a year before IPL 2025. However, after winning the Champions Trophy in 2025 and the T20 World Cup in 2026, it is now expected that his tenure may be extended further, because Team India is now going to focus on the preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

According to sources, BCCI has received a request from Agarkar to extend his tenure. Agarkar has done excellent work since assuming office in July 2023. Team India has benefited from his experience as a player, coach (Delhi Capitals) and selector (Mumbai). Last year, BCCI had extended his tenure till June 2026, which he accepted.
