Agarkar, who has left his mark as the Chief Selector of Team India, has now made a special request to the BCCI, which is directly related to India's preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup. In this crucial phase of the team continuously winning ICC trophies, Agarkar's role has become even more important and due to this the discussion of extending his tenure has intensified.

Former Indian cricketer Ajit Agarkar has reportedly requested BCCI to retain him as chief selector till the 2027 ODI World Cup. Agarkar took charge of the selection committee in 2023 and his tenure was extended for a year before IPL 2025. However, after winning the Champions Trophy in 2025 and the T20 World Cup in 2026, it is now expected that his tenure may be extended further, because Team India is now going to focus on the preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Will he remain the chief selector till 2027 World Cup?
According to sources, BCCI has received a request from Agarkar to extend his tenure. This matter has also been discussed and at present the board does not have any concrete option to replace him, hence his demand is likely to be accepted. The report also states that a former Indian cricketer from West Zone is being considered as his possible replacement, but no concrete progress has been made in this direction yet.

Agarkar's brilliant tenure

Agarkar has done excellent work since assuming office in July 2023. Team India has benefited from his experience as a player, coach (Delhi Capitals) and selector (Mumbai). During his tenure, India has won big titles like T20 World Cup 2024, ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and T20 World Cup 2026. Apart from this, the team also reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. Last year, BCCI had extended his tenure till June 2026, which he accepted. According to a BCCI official, the reason behind the extension of his tenure was not only the team's victories, but the team's successful transition to Test and T20 formats was also considered an important reason. However, if Agarkar's tenure is extended, it will be a first of its kind because before this no selector has got an extension of more than 2 years.
