Birth in a royal family, royal upbringing and a life of comfort, Brigadier Maharaja Sawai Bhawani Singh had it all. Still, the first thing he chose was the Indian Army uniform. His story is special because despite holding a high position in the army, he took a salary of only Rs 1 per month. This decision was not related to rules, but to his own thinking and patriotism.
Bhavani Singh, after studying at Doon School and Harrow (UK), took training from the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun. In 1954, he got commission in the 3rd Cavalry Regiment of the Indian Army. From here his real military journey started. He moved forward not like a Maharaja, but like an ordinary officer with strict training, discipline and responsibilities.
Over time, he performed different responsibilities, but the India-Pakistan war of 1971 became the biggest chapter of his military life. At that time he was leading the 10th Battalion of the Parachute Regiment (10 PARA). This unit is known for special operations. Bhavani Singh showed excellent leadership in going into enemy territory and carrying out missions, maintaining the morale of the soldiers and moving forward with strategy.

Was honored with Mahavir Chakra
For his bravery and wisdom, he was given the country’s second highest gallantry award, Mahavir Chakra (MVC). This honor is given not only for courage, but for exceptional leadership and making a risky operation successful.
But the most striking aspect of his story is related to salary. As an officer in the army, he was to get full salary and facilities. Still he decided that he would take only Rs 1 per month. He believed that when he was already rich, it was not right to take salary in return for serving the country. This sacrifice is still considered a unique example in the history of the Indian Army.
When and how long did you provide services?
He served in the army from 1951 to 1975. Leading an active military life for so long, leading the war and yet maintaining simplicity was the hallmark of his personality. He was known among his colleagues as a strict but inspiring officer.
