SMS Code: In today's digital era, smartphone users receive many types of SMS every day like bank alerts, offers, OTP or service updates. But very few people notice that at the end of many messages a small letter is written like P, G, T or S. Actually, these letters are not a coincidence but there is a special meaning hidden behind them. By understanding these, you can also identify what kind of message it is and in many cases you can also avoid online fraud.
What do the letters written at the end of SMS mean?
Under the rules for sending messages in India, the telecom regulator asks companies to decide whether they should keep their SMS in a particular category. For this reason, a letter is put at the end of many messages which tells what type of message it is.
Meaning of G
If G is written at the end of an SMS, it means that the message has been sent by a government organization. Such messages are usually sent to provide information related to government schemes, public safety or natural disaster.
T means
If T is written at the end of a message then it is usually a transaction related message. Such SMS are often sent by banks or financial institutions, which include payment information, OTP or account related alerts.
Meaning of S
S appearing at the end of the message means that it is service related information. Such SMS are often sent by companies or brands. For example, e-commerce platforms like Amazon or Flipkart can send their order updates or delivery related information through such messages.
Meaning of P
If P is written at the end of SMS then it is usually an advertising or promotional message. In this, companies promote their products, offers or services. Like information about discount on clothes, education loan, college admission or any new scheme.
How can you avoid online fraud with these codes?
Identifying these letters can sometimes prove helpful to users. According to cyber experts, many fake or scam messages often do not follow these categories and do not have any such letters at the end. Although it is not necessary that every message without letters is fake, but it can definitely be considered a warning sign.
How to stop promotional SMS
If you are troubled by frequent promotional messages, you can activate the Do Not Disturb (DND) feature of your telecom operator.
For Jio users
Open MyJio app, go to Menu and Settings and turn on Do Not Disturb option. After this you can choose the DND setting as per your choice.
For Airtel and Vi users
Airtel and Vodafone Idea users can also activate DND through their respective apps or services. After doing this, receiving unwanted promotional SMS will stop to a great extent.
