SMS Fraud in India: There has been an increase in the cases of fraud through SMS in India. There has been an increase of 146 percent in these cases in the last one year. BioCatch’s report states that fraud cases have increased by 86 percent on iOS, which is considered more secure, while on Android this increase has been 35 percent. If we talk about the loss due to cyber fraud, then in 2025, cyber fraud complaints worth Rs 22,496 crore have been registered in India. From this it can be estimated how much loss people are facing due to cyber fraud.
Why are SMS frauds increasing?
According to media reports, BioCatch’s Director of Global Fraud Intelligence Tom Peacock said that SMS frauds are more effective because they take advantage of trusted communication channels. Fraudulent SMS messages appear genuine and the user trusts them without thinking too much. It has been said in the report that scammers are also keeping an eye on the UPI ecosystem.
Cyber criminals are committing bigger frauds in less time.
It has been said in the report that fraudsters are now causing huge losses in a short time. The average time of mobile fraud session has reduced by 32 percent, but the amount of money transferred during this period has increased by 1.7 times. This means that fraudsters are now transferring money from people’s accounts to their own accounts very fast. Peacock said that fraud of more money in a short call shows that fraudsters are now becoming more efficient and scams are becoming sophisticated. Criminals are now using social engineering and automated techniques to launder money even before warnings are seen.
People suffered loss of more than Rs 22,000 crore
People are suffering huge losses in cases of cyber fraud. As we told you above that in 2025, complaints related to cyber fraud worth Rs 22,496 crore were registered, while transfers worth Rs 9,000 crore were declined. In the last one year, investigators have identified more than 8.5 lakh such accounts in 700 branches of 700 different banks, in which fraud money was being deposited.
