New Delhi. Whenever there is talk of the most dangerous opening pairs in the history of Indian cricket, the names of Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar will come first. Along with Sachin, who is called the God of Cricket, Ganguly thrashed the opposing bowlers on the field. These two greats batted together in 176 innings in ODI cricket and added a total of 8,227 runs. During this period, the average of both of them was 48. The greatness of this record can be gauged from the fact that till date no other pair in the history of ODI cricket has been able to touch the figure of 6,000 runs. In such a situation, it seems almost impossible for anyone to break this record of Dada and Sachin in future also.
Sourav Ganguly left his deep mark not only in limited overs cricket but also in Test cricket. This former left-handed batsman has a record in his name in Test cricket, which till date no Indian batsman has been able to cross. In the year 2007, in the Bengaluru Test against Pakistan, Dada created a ruckus with his bat and played a marathon inning of 239 runs. This is the highest individual score ever made by any Indian left-handed batsman in Test cricket, which still stands proudly today.

The only player to win ‘Man of the Match’ four consecutive times
Sourav Ganguly has a unique world record in One Day International cricket, which even the world’s biggest giants have not been able to repeat. In the year 1997, in the series played against Pakistan in Toronto, Ganguly won the title of ‘Man of the Match’ in four consecutive matches on the basis of his all-round game. His unmatched consistency and match-winning ability is still an example in world cricket.
‘Ultimate King’ of ICC Champions Trophy
When it came to big ICC tournaments, Sourav Ganguly’s bat used to speak loudly. His captaincy innings of 117 runs played against New Zealand in the final of the 2000 ICC Knockout Tournament (now called Champions Trophy) is still a part of history. This is still the highest individual score in the final history of this tournament. Apart from this, Dada also became the first cricketer in the world to score three centuries in the history of ICC Champions Trophy, which testifies to his being a big-match player.
Ganguly holds the record for playing the biggest innings in the World Cup.
No cricket lover can ever forget the innings played by Sourav Ganguly against Sri Lanka in the 1999 World Cup at Taunton. Ganguly, along with Rahul Dravid, took the Sri Lankan bowlers on remand and played a stormy inning of 183 runs in just 158 balls. In this innings he hit 17 fours and 7 skyscraper sixes. Even after more than two decades, it is still the highest individual score by any Indian batsman in the history of ODI World Cup.
Unique coincidence of Lord’s debut century and farewell match
A very interesting and poetic coincidence is seen at the beginning and end of Sourav Ganguly’s Test career. In the year 1996, Ganguly gave the message of his arrival to the world by scoring a brilliant century (131 runs) in his debut test at the historic ground of ‘Lord’s’, known as the Mecca of cricket. At the same time, in the last innings of the last Test of his career against Australia in Nagpur in 2008, he was out for a duck (golden duck) on the very first ball. The paradox of a brilliant start at Lord’s and being out on the first ball in the farewell match is counted among the most unique and memorable stories in the history of cricket.
