- The AI boom is increasing the power demand of data centers.
- Cow dung can become the solution to this increasing energy need.
- Renewable natural gas (RNG) will be created by capturing methane.
- This RNG will be able to provide continuous power to the data centers.
Data Center Power Problem: After the AI boom, the demand for data centers has increased and companies are investing heavily in it. Along with water, data centers also require a large amount of electricity. Due to this, the load on the grid is continuously increasing and to avoid this, companies are now looking towards other power sources. It may sound strange, but companies are seeing the solution to the ever-increasing need of electricity in cow dung. Let us know how the energy needs of the data center can be met with cow dung.
How much power does a data center need?
The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that by 2030, data centers will need about 945 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity each year. This is more than the total electricity consumption of Japan. This consumption will be double as compared to today and the biggest responsible behind this will be AI.
How will electricity generated from cow dung power the data center?
The answer lies in renewable natural gas (RNG). TOI report states that according to the US Department of Energy, methane released from cow dung can be captured and made into fuel. Instead of allowing this gas to enter the environment, electricity can be generated, which can power homes, factories and even data centers. It is being said that this will also reduce methane emissions and in the era of AI, the increased energy needs of data centers will also be met.
How will cow dung fulfill this need?
When cow dung decomposes, it releases methane gas. It is considered a greenhouse gas and is more dangerous than carbon dioxide. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says that over a 100-year period, methane can increase global warming by 28 times compared to carbon dioxide. Now instead of letting this methane dissolve in the air, it is being considered to generate electricity from it. After cleaning the methane produced from cow dung, it becomes a renewable natural gas. It can be transported to the power station through pipeline. There will be no need for any new infrastructure for this. Electricity from the power station will reach the data center. Solar and wind energy systems are dependent on weather, but this method will be able to supply electricity continuously without interruption.
