Former Indian cricket team legend Ravichandran Ashwin believes that if cricket has to be made global then the T20 format will have to be promoted. Ashwin will soon be seen playing in the European T20 Premier League. Apart from this, he believes that it is difficult to say anything about what will be the future of ODI cricket in the future.
Ravichandran Ashwin made predictions for ODI format
New Delhi: Indian cricket team’s veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes that the franchise-based European T20 Premier League (ETPL) is a necessary initiative in the current cricket scenario. Along with this, he believes that the future of T20 cricket is very strong, whereas he is not sure about the future of ODI cricket. Ashwin will captain the Dublin Guardians team in ETPL.
Ashwin, the second most successful bowler in India’s Test cricket history, believes that this league will play an important role in the global expansion of the game considering the return of cricket in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. In response to PTI’s question, Ashwin said, “Olympics are to be held in a few years and if cricket really wants to become a global sport, then teams from such leagues will make an important contribution in it.”
T20 format will make cricket global
He said that the T20 format is the most effective medium to take cricket to more countries of the world. He said, “Our entire focus will be on T20 cricket and making it better. If cricket is to become a global sport and a successful Olympic sport, the shorter format is most practical.
He said, “For this reason T20 cricket will continue to expand. This will also increase the scope of players, which is also very important for the various leagues organized throughout the year. T20 cricket is here to stay for a long time. I am not so sure about ODI cricket.
Want to expand cricket in European countries- Ashwin
Ashwin said that his franchise does not want to limit itself to just performing well in the tournament, but also wants to contribute to the development of cricket in Ireland. He said, “Our effort will be to create a strong team, provide a better environment to the players and leave a lasting impact on this tournament. It is our responsibility towards the Dublin franchise and Irish cricket to provide proper opportunities and better experience to the players there.
According to Ashwin, the biggest objective of this league is to give a platform to the players of Scotland, Ireland and Netherlands to showcase their talent in high level competition. He said, “We want this league to develop around those players only. Rahul Dravid and I had agreed on this thinking from the beginning. We want to develop a culture where every player grows by learning something new every day.
