The Australian cricket team is going to take a big gamble for the final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. The team is planning to field Elise Perry, who was injured in the semi-finals, even though she is not completely fit. The final match will be played at Lord’s on Sunday. If Alice Perry comes on the field despite being injured, her career will be at stake.
Elise Perry can play the final despite being injured
New Delhi: Before the final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, the Australian cricket team is stuck in a dilemma. Before the final, the team’s star player Alice Perry is injured, but the team management is trying to field her despite her injury. The team’s head coach Shelley Nitschke has indicated that the all-rounder can play even if she is not completely fit. Ellis Perry’s career is at stake due to this decision of the team. Perry retired with an injury during Australia’s semi-final win against the West Indies at the Oval with what the team described as ‘slight quadriceps awareness’.
However, there has been no definite update on his condition. Nitschke, quoted by Cricinfo, was asked whether Perry could play even if she is not fully fit, to which he said: “Yeah, probably I think there are still things she wants to do, to contribute to the team and keep her place, whether it’s fielding or running between the wickets, but it’s also the fact that it’s a World Cup final so what are our tolerances? So it’s definitely a little different than some other times.”
Elise Perry has performed well throughout the tournament
The experienced all-rounder has been their best batsman in this tournament, scoring 185 runs in five innings at an average of 46.25 and a strike rate of 135.03. He has scored half-centuries against Pakistan and India, with his innings against India at Lord’s proving crucial when Australia were 68 for 3 in a tense chase. Australia will miss vital experience in Perry’s absence, but Nitschke is confident in the youth’s ability to handle pressure.
“I think it’s about giving them the confidence that, you know, we’ve got to play another game of cricket and we’re all playing very well. Making it as normal as possible but making sure they enjoy the opportunity as well. It’s also important not to get too overwhelmed with it,” he said.
