Why Do Humans Have Eyebrows: Have you ever noticed that your eyebrows automatically raise when you hear a bad joke? It happens so fast and natural that we cannot even imagine why it happened. These small lines of hair above the eyes not only enhance the beauty of the face, but also hide an interesting story of human evolution. Eyebrows are an important part of our face, but we understand their importance only when they disappear due to some reason. Suddenly the face changes and starts looking strange. The real question is that why do we have eyebrows on our face?
Why are there eyebrows?
The simplest answer is security. Eyebrows prevent sweat, rain or dust from entering the eyes. But the story does not end here. Our ancient ancestors had a raised layer of heavy bones on their faces, which protected the eyes. Over time this layer diminished and in its place eyebrows developed that could move and show emotions.

What came out in the study?
A study published in Nature Ecology and Evolution suggests that when these heavy facial bones diminished, humans developed a new way of expressing their emotions. We can easily understand emotions like happiness, surprise or question by the slight movement of the eyebrows. Interestingly, eyebrows also help us recognize people. In the year 2003, a research found that when eyebrows were removed from photographs, it became more difficult for people to recognize faces, whereas there was not that much problem when eyes were removed, that is, the role of eyebrows is very big in facial recognition.
Besides, what is the function of eyebrows?
Apart from this, eyebrows make our facial expressions more clear. In different cultures, people beautify them, sometimes by giving them shape, sometimes by changing the color so that the face looks more attractive. Sometimes the shape of the eyebrows also gives clues to personality. Eyebrows work as communication even without speaking. A slight rise means recognition or greeting, and a shrinking means concern or question. These small gestures connect us to each other. According to a 2018 study, such facial expressions helped humans form larger and stronger groups, which proved important in our evolution.
In fact, while the faces of our ancient relatives appeared stern and scary, humans’ moving eyebrows made them appear more emotional and intelligent. These small things make us more connected and human.
