- Most remote and keyboard batteries are not rechargeable and become trash.
- Non-rechargeable AA/AAA batteries undergo an irreversible chemical reaction.
- Batteries like lithium-ion, nickel-metal hydride are recharged by reverse reaction.
- The components of the primary cell change when used, so they do not get charged.
Battery Recharge Problem: As soon as the pop-up of Low Battery appears on the phone, our attention goes towards the charger. By keeping the phone charging for some time, the battery gets charged 100 percent. Due to this, there is neither the hassle of changing the battery nor the tension of having to buy a new battery if it gets discharged. When this can happen in the phone then why does it not happen with the battery of the remote. Why can’t the batteries of remote, keyboard and mouse etc. be recharged when they are discharged and why do they become part of the garbage every time? Today we will try to know the answer to this question why all batteries are not rechargeable.
Why are not all batteries rechargeable?
The answer to this question is hidden in science. Actually, the secret of whether a battery will be rechargeable or not lies in what it is made of and how it delivers power. If we talk about non-rechargeable common AA and AAA batteries (common for remotes and watches), then they are alkaline. These contain zinc metal and manganese dioxide electrodes. When an alkaline battery is discharged, an irreversible chemical reaction occurs, which converts zinc metal into zinc oxide. After this, no matter how many electrons are added to the battery, they cannot convert the zinc oxide back into metal form. Similarly manganese dioxide is transformed.
How are rechargeable batteries made?
Unlike common batteries, rechargeable batteries like lithium ion and nickel-metal hydride undergo reverse intercalation reaction. Both these batteries shuffle the ions without damaging them, so that they can be used again and again. This type of battery is also called secondary cell. They also have heat and seals, which protect them from getting damaged by heat or gas generated during charging.
Understand the reason in simple language
If we talk about primary cells like AA and AAA, they contain components which are completely replaced or used when the battery is discharged. For this reason they cannot be recharged again. On the other hand, the secondary cell has a structure which does not change when the battery is used. For this reason, they can be easily charged again and again.
