Till 1977 he gave it a strong direction. Even today he is called the father of R&AW.

R.N. Kao’s work, his style and his thinking were so different that he kept taking big decisions for the country without coming into the limelight. He was considered a very calm, composed and very simple person in his personal life. After retirement, he was rarely seen in public places. But his contribution to the country’s security system is always remembered.

Studies started from Banaras

Rameshwar Nath Kao was born on 10 May 1918 in a Kashmiri Pandit family in Banaras, Uttar Pradesh. His family originally came from Srinagar area of ​​Kashmir. In his childhood, his uncle Pandit Trilokinath Kao raised him and inspired him for studies.

Kao’s early education took place in Baroda city. From there he passed matriculation in 1932 and intermediate in 1934. After this he reached Lucknow University, from where he took BA degree in 1936. His passion for studies did not stop here. He did MA in English Literature from Allahabad University. This was the period when the country was moving towards independence and the young generation was coming forward with new thinking.

Starting a job and stepping into the world of intelligence

After completing his studies, Kao entered government service. He became a police officer and later an intelligence officer. His wisdom, calm nature and deep understanding soon earned him a special recognition. He was also the personal security chief of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Later he also worked as security advisor to Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Kao not only created R&AW, but also played a role in setting up important units like the Aviation Research Center (ARC) and the Joint Intelligence Committee. He held the post of Secretary (Research) in the Cabinet Secretariat, which was considered a very important responsibility at that time.

Establishment of R&AW

In 1968, the Government of India decided to create a separate external intelligence agency. At that time its responsibility was RN. Gave to Kav. He gave this agency a strong structure not only on paper but on the ground. He created such systems which could keep an eye on the activities happening outside the country and could provide the right information to the government in time.
