Cyber Crime: In the last few years, there has been a rapid increase in the cases of cyber crime. Due to cyber crime, people are facing huge financial loss and mental torture every year. In view of this, the government in the country has started preparations for a digital strike against cyber crime. Some time ago, Home Minister Amit Shah had termed cyber fraud as a matter of national security and said that data theft and cyber fraud are endangering national security. To deal with this, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center (I4C) under the Home Ministry is preparing a strategy. Let us know how I4C works against cyber crime cases.
I4C was started in 2018
I4C is a nodal agency to fight cyber crime and agencies from across the country have been integrated with its platform. This agency maintains coordination between different stakeholders, which helps in investigating cyber crimes. It was started in 2018 and since then it is engaged in dealing with cyber crime and coordination among different agencies of the country.
How does I4C work?
As soon as a citizen registers a complaint of cyber fraud on the helpline number or government portal, the matter goes to the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System under I4C. This system connects the police of the concerned area with banks and other financial intermediaries. This helps the police to freeze the fraudulent money in real-time. By January this year, this system had saved more than Rs 8,000 crore from going into the pockets of fraudsters. SOP has been made for this entire work, under which police, agencies, banks and other financial institutions of all the states work.
SIM cards are also being blocked
Along with taking action on complaints, the government is also blocking SIM cards used in cyber fraud. According to reports, the Home Ministry has canceled 12 lakh SIM cards, while about 3 lakh mobiles have also been blocked.
Preparation to implement SIM binding also
SIM binding has been made mandatory to stop cyber crimes through messaging apps. A few months ago, the government had ordered all messaging platforms including WhatsApp to implement SIM binding. Recently its deadline has been extended to the end of this year. The government believes that its implementation will reduce the cases of cyber crime.
