New Delhi: After flopping in two back to back innings on the England tour, the discussion about Rohit Sharma’s retirement has intensified. According to media reports, BCCI is considering Rohit’s ODI career and his last match could be at Lord’s. However, Team India’s batting coach Sintashu Kotak has told a different story on this whole matter.
Commenting on Rohit Sharma after the defeat in the second ODI against England, Sintashu Kotak said, “I don’t think a big player like Rohit Sharma would feel pressure. He is an excellent player. Yes, he has not scored runs in the last two matches, but I don’t think it will make any difference. In today’s match also it felt that he will play a big innings, but no problem.” It is clear from this statement of Sintashu that the team management is supporting Rohit Sharma, but what is the inside story will be known only in Lord’s ODI.
Captain Shubman Gill had also given a hint on retirement
Team India captain Shubman Gill came to the press conference before the ODI series against England. During this, he was also asked questions about Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. In response to this, Gill said that Virat Kohli is not going anywhere till the 2027 World Cup, but he did not say anything special about Rohit Sharma. His statement also led to speculations that perhaps the team management is not keeping Rohit Sharma in its planning for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
In such a situation, the question arises that if Rohit Sharma takes retirement from ODI, then who will fill his place. It is not that there is lack of options for Rohit. Contenders like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan are ready in the team. If Rohit takes retirement, one of these young players can be fielded in his place for the opening.
