Ben Stokes Retirement: England’s legendary all-rounder Ben Stokes said goodbye to international cricket with the third Test against New Zealand. Ruling out the possibility of a comeback in next year’s Ashes series, Stokes made it clear that his decision is final and he has no regrets. Stokes, who started the ‘Baseball’ era, said that ending his career with controversies was probably like his entire journey.
What did Stokes say on the question of U-turn from Test retirement?
New Delhi. Ben Stokes has said that he feels the decision to end his 15-year cricket career with England is absolutely right and he has no regrets. He said, ‘That’s it, it’s done.’ Stokes suddenly announced during the third Test against New Zealand in Nottingham on Sunday that this was his last international match. His last day in the England jersey was on Monday, when New Zealand won by 160 runs to win the series 2-1.
Stokes watched the match end while standing on the balcony outside the England dressing room. The day after his retirement announcement, the BBC asked Stokes whether he would like to watch next year’s home Ashes series between England and Australia from the sofa. Stokes said, ‘I am very happy and satisfied with everything right now. This is not a decision you should take lightly. It has taken a lot of time. I have spoken to people close to me.
What was the reason for Stokes’ retirement?
He said, ‘That’s it, it’s done and I am very happy.’ Stokes’ decision to retire came after a tumultuous few weeks in which he led England to victory in the first Test at Lord’s. He then went out with a partner and was in a nightclub, where a member of the England security team was hit by a rugby player from the English club Saracens. Stokes was dropped from the second Test for violating the terms of his contract. After the investigation was completed, he returned for the third test. He described the recent events as ‘unfortunate’ and ‘interesting’. He admitted that perhaps these incidents played a role in his decision to leave international cricket.

Stokes said, ‘But the biggest thing is that in the last six to 12 months, I think everything I have done has affected me.’ He said, ‘How good it is to be in the role of captain, how exciting, what a great honour. It also has some negative aspects. I think that’s the unfortunate aspect that people don’t always see.
Career full of controversies
Controversies remained associated with Stokes till the end. Stokes has been an important player for England in the last 15 years. He played an important role in the team’s World Cup victory in 50 overs and T20 formats and captained the Test team from 2022. Under his captaincy came the ‘Baseball’ era which changed the way Test cricket was played. He has also been in the news off the field, especially due to his struggle with mental health issues and his acquittal in a street brawl after a match against the West Indies in Bristol in 2018. Stokes said, ‘Maybe I can laugh a bit by remembering this week that there was a bit of controversy about my last match for England, but I think you can see it by relating it to my whole career.’
