New Delhi: Afghanistan cricket team’s star player Hashmatullah Shahidi has announced to step down from the captaincy. Shahidi became the captain of Afghanistan in January 2022. Shahidi led Afghanistan in 55 ODIs until their last series against India. During Shahidi’s captaincy, Afghanistan participated in one Asia Cup in 2023, one World Cup and Champions Trophy in 2025.

Under Shahidi’s captaincy, Afghanistan won 27 matches, including wins against England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Netherlands during the 2023 World Cup, where Afghanistan came very close to reaching the semi-finals. Under Shahidi’s captaincy, Afghanistan defeated Bangladesh (three times), Zimbabwe (twice), and South Africa along with Ireland (once each) in the bilateral series.

Shahidi’s batting shines with captaincy

As soon as she got the captaincy, Shahidi did wonders with her bat also. When Shahidi did not get the captaincy of Afghanistan, his average was 32.97 and strike rate was 64.39. His statistics improved during his captaincy. Talking about his batting average while captaining, it became 33.79 and 70.77.

Shahidi’s only century in 96 ODIs came in Afghanistan’s last ODI against India in Chennai, where he scored 102 off 131 balls. The Afghanistan team will now be seen in action in August, when they tour Ireland for a five-match ODI series.

Apart from ODI, Shahidi has also played in 12 Test and 6 T20 matches for Afghanistan. Talking about Test, he has scored 796 runs for his team so far at an average of 44.22.
