SACHET App: If there was a sudden loud beeping sound on your smartphone on Saturday, then there is no need to panic. Actually, this was part of the testing of a new disaster warning system by the Government of India. Its purpose is that in case of any emergency, an alert can be sent to crores of people within a few seconds so that people can be alerted in time.
HOW SACHET SYSTEM WORKS
SACHET is a national platform specifically designed to provide immediate information to people during natural and man-made disasters. This system has been developed by the Center for Development of Telematics which works under the Department of Telecommunications. At the same time, it is being operated in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority.
This system is based on Common Alerting Protocol which is an internationally recognized technology. Its advantage is that alert messages are delivered fast, reliably and in the same format across all devices and networks.
Alert is received according to location
The most special thing about SACHET is that it sends alerts based on your location. That means only those people who are present in a potentially dangerous area will receive the message. This reduces unnecessary panic and information reaches the right people at the right time.
Use of SMS and Cell Broadcast
Till now this system has been mainly sending alerts through SMS but to make it stronger, Cell Broadcast technology is also being added. Through this technology, messages can be sent simultaneously to all the mobile phones present in a certain area, which does not put much pressure on the network and alerts reach faster.
Crores of messages, warnings in many languages
According to government figures, billions of messages have been sent through this system so far. These alerts have been issued in about 19 Indian languages so that more and more people can understand the warning in their own language. This includes information related to cyclones, floods, bad weather and other emergencies.
Why is recent testing important?
Recently, this system was tested on a large scale across the country, in which people received alert messages in English, Hindi and other languages. These were just trials to test the capability and reach of the system. Therefore, there is no need to panic on receiving such messages.
This new system shows that India is now rapidly increasing the use of technology in disaster management. In the coming times, platforms like SACHET can play an important role in the safety of people.
