Israel Laser Warfare: Israel is now working towards completely changing the way of war. The country's defense company Elbit Systems has revealed that it is preparing such high-power laser systems that can be installed on fighter jets and helicopters. Its objective is to destroy enemy drones and missiles in the air very quickly and at low cost.
Cheap alternative to expensive interceptor
Till now, very expensive interceptors are used to stop missiles, the cost of which reaches thousands of dollars. For example, the missiles used in Iron Dome are very expensive. In comparison, the cost of each shot can be greatly reduced by using laser technology. That means, where earlier a huge amount of money was spent in shooting down a small drone, now the same work can be done at a very low cost. This can completely change the economic strategy of war.
Special airborne system named Sting
Under this project, a special pod system for jets and a laser variant named Sting for helicopters are being developed. This system will work while flying at high altitude, which will reduce the effect of weather obstacles like rain, dust or moisture. Due to surveillance from above, this system can identify the enemy target in advance and destroy it in time, which is a big advantage compared to traditional air defense systems.
Technical challenges still remain
However, this technique is not as easy as it sounds. To install it in the aircraft, it is necessary to solve many difficulties. The biggest challenge is to make the system small and light so that it can easily fit in the aircraft. Apart from this, high-power lasers generate a lot of heat which requires advanced cooling systems to control it.
Along with this, accurately tracking small and fast targets flying in the air is also a big challenge. For this, very advanced tracking and optical systems will be required.
Technology can bring big changes in the future
The company believes that all these challenges will soon be overcome and in the coming time this system can become a part of the Air Force. Not only this, there can be a lot of demand for this technology at the global level also. The interesting thing is that this laser system will not be limited to defense only, but it can have many other uses on which work is still going on.
