The record of batting full 50 overs is in the name of Rohit Sharma and Sachin Tendulkar.

New Delhi. Shubman Gill’s departure from the field due to fitness after scoring 80 runs on the Edgbaston ground brings a question in front of the fans again and again. Will the Indian captain be able to bat the entire fifty overs in a match and will he be able to equal the records of the two great batsmen of the country. In the history of ODI cricket, it is extraordinary to stay at the crease from the first ball till the last ball of the fiftieth over. This requires not only technical skills but also tremendous mental strength and physical stamina.

India’s two great openers, Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma have made the unique record of batting 50 overs. Recently, young sensation Shubhman Gill came very close to joining this historic club, but unfortunately he missed out on equaling this mega-record by getting out in the 49th over. Apart from Sachin and Rohit, no batsman has been able to do this feat till date.

Historic feat of Rohit and Sachin

Sachin Tendulkar, known as the God of Cricket, created history in 2010 against South Africa in Gwalior. He batted from the first ball till the 50th over and scored the first double century (200*) in ODI history. After this ‘Hitman’ Rohit Sharma took this trend forward. Rohit played a historic inning of 264 runs against Sri Lanka in 2014 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. He had come to start the innings and had taken the team to an unimaginable score by remaining unbeaten till he was out on the last ball of the 50th over. Rohit had shown the same skill of staying till the end in his other double century innings also.

When Shubman Gill missed history

Shubman Gill, considered the new ‘Prince’ of Indian cricket, had also laid the foundation of a similar innings during a match. Gill opened the innings, scored runs with excellent timing, and held one end. Just when it seemed that he would join this elite club of Sachin and Rohit, the course of the game changed in the 49th over. Due to fatigue and trying to score fast runs, Gill lost his wicket in the 49th over. Although his innings was match-winning and very brilliant, but this one wicket stopped him just one step before standing equal to Rohit and Sachin in the pages of history.

What is necessary for this record?

As an opener, to face the bowlers from the first ball and keep the wicket till the end, physical fitness along with concentration is most important. Running continuously for 50 overs and only the one who does not lose concentration even in the humid environment can bat 50 overs. Playing cautiously in the beginning and the art of batting aggressively in the last overs is also very important. Even though Shubman Gill missed the opportunity once, his class and style of playing makes it clear that he will definitely make this record in the future. This record of Rohit Sharma and Sachin Tendulkar still remains a benchmark for young players.
