New Delhi. West Indies legend Sir Gary Sobers, one of the great all-rounders in cricket history, has passed away. 89-year-old Sobers breathed his last on Friday at his home in Barbados. Cricket West Indies has also confirmed the death of its ex-Sir Gary Sobers and paid tribute to him. Cricket West Indies wrote on its ex, “A brilliant innings has come to an end. In our hearts, now and forever, Sir Garfield Sobers.” Gary Sobers became the first batsman to hit 6 sixes in an over in first class cricket. Apart from this, there is also a record in his name for being the youngest person to score a triple century in Test, which still stands.

Born on 28 July 1936 in Bridgetown, Barbados, Gary Sobers started his international career in 1954 in a Test match against England in Kingston. He was a left-handed batsman and left-arm orthodox and wrist spin bowler.

From 1954 to 1974, he was the biggest and most reliable player of West Indies cricket. During this period, he scored 8,032 runs in 160 innings of 93 Test matches, scoring 26 centuries and 30 half-centuries. His highest score was 365 runs unbeaten. Apart from this, Sobers also took 235 wickets. Sobers also played one ODI. In this he took 1 wicket.

6 sixes in one over
Sobers played his initial tests as a bowler. At the age of 23, he scored his first Test century. He also broke Len Hutton’s world record for the highest individual Test score by scoring 365 runs against Pakistan at Sabina Park in 1958. This record was broken by Brian Lara in 1994. Sobers himself was present in the field to celebrate this. Sobers, while playing for Nottinghamshire, hit six sixes in an over off Glamorgan’s Malcolm Nash in first-class cricket and was the first cricketer to do so.

Youngest triple century
Gary Sobers created history by scoring a triple century in the Test against Pakistan at the age of 21 years and 213 days. He became the youngest cricketer to score a triple century. No one has been able to break this record of his till date. Sobers had captured this record by leaving Don Bradman behind.

The ICC’s highest annual award in men’s cricket, the Sir Garfield Sobers Award, is named in his honour, and recognizes the most outstanding overall performer in men’s international cricket across all formats. In 1975, he was knighted for his services to cricket.
