New Delhi. There are many such stories in the world of cricket which spread their shine on the field. But the story of Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Aamir is like the screenplay of a thriller film. It has the height of fame, the soot of fixing, the prison bars and most interestingly, a love story that blossomed between law books and court proceedings. In the year 2009, when a 17 year old thin boy was forcing the world’s great batsmen to kneel with his swing. So the world said that Pakistan has got another ‘Wasim Akram’. Aamir played an important role in winning the 2009 T20 World Cup. But the 2010 Lord’s Test proved to be the dark chapter of his life, which derailed his career.
A sting operation revealed that Mohammad Amir, along with captain Salman Butt and fellow bowler Mohammad Asif, had deliberately bowled ‘no ball’ on the instructions of bookie Mazhar Majid. At the age of just 18, Aamir was found guilty of spot fixing. The ICC banned him for 5 years and a British court sentenced him to jail. The prison walls could have been the end of a career for any player, but for Aamir it became a place of new beginning. In this difficult time, Pakistan-origin British lawyer Narjis Khatoon was fighting his case.

During the prosecution of the case, the number of meetings between Narjis and Aamir increased. On one hand, Aamir was struggling with the stigma of fixing, while on the other hand, Narjis was trying to understand the innocent part of him. It is said that when the whole world stood against Aamir, Narjis not only strengthened his legal side but also supported him emotionally. This ‘love story’ that started between the jail bars and court cross-examination turned into the sacred bond of Nikah in the year 2016.
The passion for comeback and that spell of ‘Champions Trophy’
After the ban ended in 2015, Aamir returned to the cricket field. It was not easy; Cricket fans around the world and some fellow players were also against him. But Aamir responded with his ability. His spell against India in the final of the 2017 Champions Trophy in which he dismissed Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli is still counted among the deadliest spells in the history of cricket. This victory made Aamir a hero again in the eyes of Pakistani people.
Retirement, controversy and British citizenship
Aamir’s career has never been completely free from controversies. Due to differences with the management of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the then coaches Misbah-ul-Haq and Waqar Younis, he retired from international cricket in 2020 at the age of just 28. He accused the management of ‘mental torture’. After retirement, Aamir decided to settle in Britain with his wife and family. He applied for British citizenship and is now a UK card holder. Today Aamir is living a happy life in England with his wife Narjis and three daughters Minsa, Zoya and Ayra.
