In view of the scorching heat and heatwave in UP, the state government has taken a big decision. The state government has extended the period of summer vacation in council schools run and recognized under the Basic Education Council. Due to which now studies in primary and upper primary schools in the state will start from June 25, 2026. Earlier, schools were to open from June 16.
According to the order issued by the Basic Education Department, this decision has been taken keeping in mind the health and safety of the students. The temperature is continuously increasing in many districts of the state and hot winds can affect children. In such a situation, the government has decided to keep the schools closed for a few more days.
What is in the letter?
In the letter issued by Additional Chief Secretary Basic Education, it has been said that the duration of summer vacation has also been fixed permanently from the year 2026. Now every year there will be summer vacation in council schools from 20th May to 24th June. After this, regular educational activities will start from June 25.
The government believes that there is extreme heat in the state during May and June, which can have an adverse effect on the health of children. For this reason, it has been decided to provide relief to the students by increasing the duration of holidays.
When will the classes start?
Although children’s classes in schools will start from June 25, teachers and other staff will have to reach school before that. According to the order, all teachers, Shikshamitras, instructors and non-teaching staff will be present in the school on 22, 23 and 24 June.

What will happen?
During these three days, preparations for the new academic session will be made in schools. Teachers have been entrusted with the task of preparing lesson plans, ensuring availability of textbooks for students and maintaining other systems of the school.
Apart from this, works like reviewing the preparations for the Mid-Day Meal Scheme, cleaning the school premises, cleaning the kitchen and toilets, checking the drinking water system and making the smart class and ICT lab fully functional will also be completed during the same period. The aim of the department is to provide a better and safe educational environment to the students when they return to school.

The Basic Education Department has also clarified that academic work will not be affected by increasing the duration of leave. Compliance with the 220 working days prescribed in schools under the Right to Education Act (RTE) will be ensured.
