Mumbai: A stand named after former India all-rounder Ravi Shastri was unveiled at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday. On this occasion, Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) also honored its other legendary players like Diana Edulji, Eknath Solkar and Dilip Sardesai. The ‘Shastri Stand’ was unveiled at a ceremony attended by several eminent personalities including Sunil Gavaskar and current India T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav.

The gate of Wankhede Stadium was named after former Indian captain Edulji, former Indian all-rounder Solkar and Sardesai. Sardesai played 30 Tests and 179 first-class matches. Former India head coach Shastri looked very emotional during his speech at Wankhede.

Ravi Shastri remembered his father

Shastri said, “My wife is here, my daughter is here, she has never seen me playing… my sister is there, my nephew is there, everyone is present. I am happy, I am sad about only one thing – my father. He was my hero but today he is not present here.” He said, ”In those days he used to watch every match from the Garware Pavilion end. Now he is up (in heaven), and he will be proud that all this has happened.

Cricketer turned commentator Shastri said in his unique style, “There is one shot of mine in this Wankhede Stadium which I like the most. He might have hit countless sixes in his 15-year career but that shot was against Australia. I hit a six over the ‘Ravi Shastri Stand’ off the ball of Bruce Reid. That’s my favorite shot.

Diana Edulji became emotional

Edulji, the leader of women’s cricket in India, was also overwhelmed with emotions on this occasion. Edulji, who has been an administrator of the Indian Cricket Board, said, “This is a big honor for me and all the women cricketers. This is a dream come true for me. This is a historic day in my life. I will never forget this day in my life.” Edulji played 20 Tests and 34 ODI matches. The families of Eknath Solkar and Dilip Sardesai were also present on this occasion. Both these great players are no longer in this world.
