The journey of Punjab Kings has been great so far in IPL 2026. PBKS under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer is the only team which no one has been able to defeat. However, one of the team’s matches was canceled due to rain, due to which they had to share points with KKR. Punjab looks different under the captaincy of Iyer, not only in the ongoing edition but last year also the team was doing well and reached the finals. But this time Iyer wants Punjab to win its first trophy. He told that at first he did not know the true meaning of Sarpanch, then he asked his fellow players.
On a show on JioHotstar, Shreyas Iyer told that the fans of Punjab Kings used to call him Sarpanch Sarpanch. Earlier I did not know its true meaning. He said, “I like this name. When I came to Punjab Kings, I did not know its meaning and how did this tag come? Then I asked the players of my team about its true meaning and they told that Sarpanch means the head of a group or a district.”
Target to lift IPL trophy
Iyer’s aim is to help Punjab Kings win their first trophy in the Indian Premier League 2026. He said, “Our aim is to win the trophy. I believe you have to be in the present, take control of the moment at hand and move forward quickly. Don’t think too far ahead, I also tell my players that we are playing for ourselves and not against the opposition. We want to improve every day and want to make sure that we are giving our best.”

Shreyas Iyer made Kolkata Knight Riders champion in 2024 under his captaincy, but even after that KKR did not retain him. Punjab Kings bought him in the auction for 2025 and appointed him as their captain. In the very first season, he took Punjab to the finals, although they lost the finals but the margin of victory was very less. Once again Punjab is moving forward positively.

Punjab Kings in IPL 2026
Punjab Kings have won 4 out of 5 matches played in IPL 2026, one match of the team was washed out due to rain. With 9 points and a net run rate of +1.067, Punjab is at the first position in the points table. Punjab’s next match is with Lucknow Super Giants on Sunday.
