Iyer became the second such captain after Pant

Mumbai’s 31-year-old right-handed batsman Shreyas Iyer has become only the second player for the Indian men’s team to lose his first two T20Is as captain. Before him, the same thing had happened with Rishabh Pant also. Pant captained India for the first time in the home T20I series against South Africa in June 2022. The team had lost the first two matches of that 5-match series.

In the second match, batting at number 4, he could score only 10 runs in 7 balls. The first T20I loss under Iyer’s captaincy was India’s first defeat in international cricket against Ireland. With the 1-run defeat on Sunday, India lost a T20I series against Ireland for the first time. With this, India’s wonderful streak of winning 16 consecutive T20I series was also broken.

After this poor start as T20I captain, Iyer will now hope to bounce back in the 5-match T20I series against England. The Indian men’s team will tour England next week, where it will play 5 T20Is and 3 ODIs. In the T20I series, the command of the team will remain in the hands of Shreyas Iyer.
