Rohit Sharma can announce his retirement after playing the third ODI.
New Delhi. BCCI dismissed speculations about Rohit Sharma’s future and said that the third ODI against England at Lord’s on Sunday is not his last match. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia told PTI that there is no such discussion that Rohit will play his last international match on Sunday at Lord’s. Let us tell you that it was claimed in many reports that the management has made it clear to Rohit Sharma that they are not seeing him in the team’s future plans after the India-England ODI series, after which the speculations about the retirement of this legendary batsman intensified.
‘Lord’s ODI is not Rohit’s last match’
Saikia said in a special conversation with PTI, ‘There is a lot of speculation in the media regarding the future of Rohit Sharma. I want to emphatically say that there is no discussion that Rohit will play his last match at Lord’s on Sunday. He further said, ‘Rohit is a regular member of the Indian ODI team and will continue to play for the country as long as he is part of the team’s plans. In other words, Lord’s ODI is not his last match.
There is speculation that the Lord’s ODI will be Rohit’s last international match as the national selectors have told him that he is not part of the team’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup. This has strengthened the possibility that he may announce his retirement after Sunday’s match or may be dropped from the team. It is noteworthy that he has already retired from Test and T20.
What did the reports say?
In all the reports that came out about Rohit, it was said that the selectors are not considering the former Indian captain, who has won two ICC trophies, as a part of their future plans for next year’s ODI World Cup. It was also said that head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar are unanimous on the issue that Virat Kohli deserves automatic selection in the team due to his current form and fitness whereas this is not the case with Rohit Sharma. It was even said that if Rohit Sharma is retained in the team even after the England tour, then Yashasvi Jaiswal will be deprived of important match experience, which the selectors do not consider appropriate.
The reason was also given in the form
In the last eight ODI innings, 39-year-old Rohit Sharma has scored only 241 runs. During this period, his average has been 30.1 and strike rate has been 88.6, while he has scored only one half-century with his bat. This form of his was being said to be a major reason for his retirement. However, BCCI Secretary has rejected all the speculations and given great news to the Indian fans.
