Mumbai gave the gift of contracts to its domestic players.

New Delhi. Mumbai Cricket Association has added a revolutionary chapter in the history of Indian domestic cricket. MCA, one of the most successful cricket associations in the country, has now become the first state association in India to decide to implement the Central Contract System for its domestic players. This initiative will not only provide financial security to Mumbai cricketers, but it also signals a major change in the structure of Indian domestic cricket.

Till now in India, only the ‘Board of Control for Cricket in India’ (BCCI) used to provide central contracts to the players playing on the international stage. At the domestic level, players depended only on match fees and allowances. With this decision of MCA, now those players of Mumbai will also be guaranteed a fixed annual income, who work hard throughout the year but have not yet been able to become a part of the national team (Team India).

Expressing happiness over this historic decision, MCA President Ajinkya Nayak said, ‘This initiative is the beginning of a new era for Mumbai cricket. We are proud that we have become the first association to implement the player contract system. This is a progressive step that will provide our players with greater security, structure and development opportunities. This reflects our vision to strengthen the foundation of Mumbai cricket and empower the next generation of cricketers.

These contracts will not be given on the basis of name only, but on the basis of merit. MCA has clarified that to get the contract, players will have to fulfill three main criteria.

Performance on the field: Player’s statistical contributions in previous seasons.

Fitness Benchmark: Physical ability as per the requirements of modern cricket.

Selection Committee Recommendation: Evaluation of experts and selectors.
