Relief to medical colleges, government changed rules; Clear the way to increase MBBS seats

One often hears about the shortage of doctors in the country. Every year lakhs of students pass NEET, but due to limited seats the dream of many students remains unfulfilled. Now a big change can be seen in this picture. National Medical Commission (NMC), New Delhi has issued notification of important amendments in the Graduate Medical Education Regulation-2023. After this decision, the way has been cleared to increase MBBS seats across the country.

If reports are to be believed, these changes will make expansion of medical colleges easier and will also facilitate opening of new institutions. The biggest thing is that the limitations which were earlier applicable on medical colleges have now been removed to a great extent. Earlier, the maximum limit for increasing MBBS seats in any medical college was fixed at 150 seats. That means even if the college had a better building, hospital, staff, it still could not apply for more than 150 seats. Now this limit has been completely removed.

This means that medical colleges which have good infrastructure and resources will be able to apply for more seats as per their capacity. Earlier there was another condition that a maximum of 100 MBBS seats would be allowed for a population of 10 lakh. This rule has also been removed now. This means that now the number of seats will not be directly related to the population of any area. This will provide an opportunity to expand medical colleges even in those areas where earlier seats could not be increased due to population rules.

hospital distance rule changed

Earlier, the travel time between the medical college and its associated hospital should not have been more than 30 minutes. Due to this rule, many institutions got stuck as it became difficult to meet the deadline due to traffic or distance. Now this rule has been changed and the distance has been fixed. According to the new rule, there should be a maximum distance of 10 kilometers between the college and the hospital. Whereas for North-Eastern and hilly states this limit has been kept at 15 kilometers.

Big relief for students

Students will get the biggest benefit from the increase in MBBS seats. Every year a large number of students pass NEET exam, but due to less seats they have to choose other courses or go abroad. Now with the increase in seats, more students will get the opportunity to study medicine in the country.

New direction in medical education

This decision of NMC is being considered as a new direction in the field of medical education. This will not only benefit the colleges, but also the students, teachers and the entire health system.
