The National Medical Commission (NMC) has clarified the situation amid the ongoing discussions regarding the proposal to change the Head of Department (HOD) every three years in the medical colleges of the country. The Commission has said that no final decision has been taken yet in this matter and the discussion on the proposal is still going on.
Recently, it was reported that a proposal is being prepared to limit the tenure of Heads of Departments in medical colleges to three years and thereafter appoint new HODs on the basis of rotation in the department. After this news, many discussions started in the world of medical education. Many teachers and experts had also given their opinions in favor and against this proposal.

Now NMC has said that the proposed amendment is still only in the discussion stage. He said that the Commission takes opinion from concerned parties across the country before implementing any major change. PG Diploma courses will be closed
Apart from this, let us tell you that NMC has decided that all Post Graduate (PG) Diploma Medical courses will be closed in the coming years. Degree programs like Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Master of Surgery (MS) will be started in their place.
NMC has issued a letter in this regard to medical colleges and institutions across the country. According to the Commission, the academic session 2026-27 will be the last year for admission to PG Diploma course. After this, from 2027-28, new students will not be admitted to these courses and gradually these courses will be completely abolished.
