New world record for most wickets, Shabnam Ismail created history in Women’s T20 World Cup

New Delhi. South African fast bowler Shabnam Ismail has created history. She has become the highest wicket-taker in the history of Women’s T20 World Cup. Shabnam Ismail achieved this feat in the match against Bangladesh on Sunday. Shabnam Ismail bowled brilliantly against Bangladesh and took 1 wicket for just 15 runs in 4 overs. This was Shabnam’s 49th wicket in T20 World Cup history. As soon as she took this wicket, she left Australia’s Megan Schutt behind and registered her name as the bowler taking the most wickets. Shabnam achieved a historic feat by taking the wicket of Nehar Ismail.

Ismail, who debuted in the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2009, has so far taken 49 wickets in 37 matches. Before Ismail, the record for most wickets in T20 World Cup history was in the name of Australia’s Megan Scott. Scott has 48 wickets to his name. She is also a part of the Australian team in the current T20 World Cup and can leave Shabnam behind.

This achievement adds another chapter to an already extraordinary journey. Ismail took a break from international cricket in May 2023 after helping South Africa reach their first Women’s T20 World Cup final. He has returned for the 2026 edition.
