What is Loan System In IPL 2026: IPL loan system is a rule in which if a player gets injured during the game, then another player is included in the team in his place. During a match of IPL 2026, Chennai Super Kings’ young batsman Ayush Mhatre got injured due to which he is out of the entire tournament. Former Indian spinner R Ashwin, who retired from IPL in August 2025, has advised to use the IPL loan system to replace him.
What is IPL loan system?
If a player is injured and his team has not yet played 12 matches in the tournament, then he is replaced by another player. The player selected for replacement is required to pass a medical test with a medical panel appointed by the BCCI. Only after the test is cleared, the franchise is allowed to buy the player. This replacement is mainly for those players who were not selected by any franchise in the auction. Trade is not included in this.
According to the rules, a player can be replaced only if he has played 2 or more matches. This system can be used only once in a season.
The rule is applicable from the year 2018
Let us tell you that the rules related to the loan system and its deadline in IPL are in force since the year 2018. However, strict rules and regulations have been made for this, due to which it has not been used much.
Under this system, one franchise can take a player on ‘loan’ from another franchise. The special thing is that in this process the player is not bought, rather he only joins the team as a replacement for the injured player.
