Thanks to the brilliant innings of Ben Duckett (141) and Jacob Bethel (91), the host team had scored a huge score of 387/3. In reply, Rohit Sharma played a historic inning of 138 runs, Shubman Gill (77) and Virat Kohli (74) also scored half-centuries. But due to the faltering of the middle order and the lethal bowling of Sam Curran, India could only score 360/7 in 50 overs. India started the ODI series with a win. In the second match, England made a comeback and leveled the series 1-1.
Duckett and Bethel’s record partnership
England had a great start after winning the toss and coming to bat first. Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethel put India on the back foot by adding 192 runs for the first wicket. This is the record for the largest opening partnership in an ODI match at Lord’s. Duckett scored 141 runs in 135 balls, which included 18 fours and one six. At the same time, Jacob Bethel missed his first ODI century by scoring 91 runs in 93 balls. Joe Root scored unbeaten 74 runs in 48 balls and in the end Jos Buttler’s unbeaten 41 runs in just 13 balls took England’s score to 387/3. This is England’s biggest score in ODI against India.

Gurnoor Brar proved to be the most expensive
This match was very disappointing for India’s young fast bowler Gurnoor Brar. He gave away 97 runs in 10 overs without taking any wicket. This became the most expensive ODI spell of any bowler at Lord’s. He left behind the record of Karsan Ghavri (81 runs) in 1975. Not only this, this is also the third most expensive bowling spell from India in ODI history. Prasidh Krishna (69 runs in 10 overs) took two wickets for India, Prince Yadav (79 runs in 10 overs) got one success. Akshar Patel (61 runs in 10 overs), Arshdeep Singh (72 runs in 10 overs) remained empty handed.
Rohit’s historic century turned upside down
India had a great start while chasing the huge target of 388 runs. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill gave a good start to the team by adding 147 runs for the first wicket. Rohit played a brilliant inning of 138 runs in 110 balls. He hit 17 fours and 5 sixes. This proved to be a memorable century in his ODI career. He became the first Indian batsman to score an ODI century at Lord’s. Rohit made the highest ODI score by an Indian at Lord’s. Before this, Sourav Ganguly’s 90 runs was the highest. At the age of 39 years and 80 days, he became the oldest batsman to score an ODI century at Lord’s. He became the oldest Indian batsman to score an international century in all three international formats.
Virat tried, but did not get support
Before Rohit’s dismissal, India appeared to be in a strong position. Shubman Gill scored 77 runs in 84 balls, while Virat Kohli played a brilliant inning of 74 runs in 60 balls. There was a partnership of 113 runs for the second wicket between Rohit and Virat. However, after Rohit’s dismissal, India lost wickets rapidly, due to which the pressure on Kohli to play big shots increased and he too got out. Ishan Kishan (14), Shreyas Iyer (0), KL Rahul (12) and Axar Patel (2) were out cheaply. This affected the run rate and India remained away from the target.
Sam Curran turned the match
Sam Curran proved to be the biggest match winner for England. He took 4 wickets for 75 runs in 10 overs. Curran dashed India’s hopes of a comeback by dismissing important batsmen like Virat Kohli, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer and Akshar Patel. Adil Rashid, Joffra Archer and Jacob Bettel also got one wicket each. Jacob Bethel was named Player of the Match, while Joe Root became Player of the Series, scoring half-centuries in three matches.
