Recently, people across the country are keeping an eye on the case of alleged irregularities in the donations of devotees in the Ayodhya Ram temple of UP. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to get to the bottom of this matter. This team has also submitted its initial investigation report to the Uttar Pradesh government. This three-member SIT was constituted by the state government on June 13. In such a situation, many people have a question as to how officers are selected in the SIT investigating a high-profile case.
Actually, SIT is not a permanent investigation agency. It is made on the orders of the State Government, Central Government or the Supreme Court and High Court for impartial and thorough investigation of a particular case. After the completion of the investigation, the work of this team also ends automatically.
How are officers selected?
Let us tell you that officers are not selected in SIT through any new recruitment. In this, experienced police and administrative officers already working in government service are included. Officers who have good service record, experience in investigating serious cases and whose impartiality is trusted are given preference. The command of the SIT formed in the Ram Temple donation case was handed over to Lucknow Division Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant. This team includes three senior officers.

Who decides?
If the SIT is constituted by the state government, then the Home Department and the Police Headquarters decide the names of senior officers. At the same time, if the Supreme Court or the High Court orders to form a SIT in a case, then the court can also decide which officers will be in the team or which agency’s officers will be included.
What is responsibility?
SIT can be given more powers than a normal investigation team. The team examines the documents, interrogates the people concerned, collects CCTV footage, bank records and other evidence. If needed, help of forensic and technical experts is also taken. In the Ram temple donation case also, SIT interrogated the trust officials and many suspicious people. The preliminary investigation report has been submitted to the government, but the investigation is still going on and the final report will be given later.
