New Delhi. An exciting cricket schedule has been announced for the Asian Games. Cricket is all set to make its mark on the Asian Games stage for the fourth time. Earlier, this game has also attracted spectators in the editions of 2010 (Guangzhou), 2014 (Incheon) and 2023 (Hangzhou). This time the eyes of the whole world will be on the Indian team, because India will take the field to defend its gold medal in both men’s and women’s categories. This tournament will be played in T-20 format and will get the status of International T-20. Women’s cricket competition will start from 17th September, which will continue till 22nd September. The defending champion Indian women’s team will start its campaign directly from the quarter-final match, where it will face the host Japan team. If the Indian team registers its victory against Japan, then in the semi-finals it will face the winner of the quarter-final match between Bangladesh and China. In the other quarter-final matches of the tournament, Sri Lanka will face Malaysia, while arch-rival Pakistan will face Thailand. In the second semi-final, the winner of Sri Lanka/Malaysia will face the winner of Pakistan/Thailand.
The command of the Indian women’s team, which is entering the field with the intention of defending the title, has been handed over to Harmanpreet Kaur, while Smriti Mandhana will be in the role of vice-captain. The initial preliminary round will be played between six teams for the remaining four places in the quarter-finals.
The teams have been divided into two groups for the preliminary round. Group A includes teams from Afghanistan, host Japan and Nepal, while Group B includes Hong Kong, China, Malaysia and Oman. The top two teams from both the groups will make it to the quarter-finals and will compete against these four seeded teams. The most interesting aspect of this knockout format is that the two arch-rivals India and Pakistan can come face to face only once in the entire tournament. This great match will be seen either in the semi-finals or directly in the final match.
