Cricketers Reaction on Garry Sobers Death: Garry Sobers started his international career in 1954 with a Test match against England in Kingston. He was a left-handed batsman and left-arm orthodox and wrist spin bowler. From 1954 to 1974, he was the biggest and most reliable player of West Indies cricket. Sir Gary Sobers died on Friday in Barbados at the age of 89. The cricket world has expressed grief over his demise on social media. Shastri-Vengsarkar expressed grief
Ravi Shastri described Sobers as the greatest cricketer of his life. He wrote, ‘The greatest cricketer of my life. I am just looking at that period and contribution which has no match. My hero. God rest your soul Sir Gary.
Indian legend Dilip Vengsarkar told PTI, ‘I have never seen him play, but have heard many stories about him. Have seen clips of his batting and a film recorded on his batting in 1971. His test records are amazing. The greatest all-rounder. This is a sad day for the cricket world.
Harbhajan Singh also expressed his condolences and wrote, ‘The cricket world has lost one of its rare gems. Sir Gary Sobers was more than a legend. He was the definition of greatness who impressed generations with extraordinary skill and humility. You will always remain immortal in the hearts of cricket fans around the world. You will never be forgotten.
‘Never seen him play but…’
15-year-old Indian cricket’s young sensation batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi wrote in a social media post, ‘I have never seen Sir Gary Sobers play but I have grown up hearing stories of his greatness from my father. Great heroes of every generation. Om Shanti.’ Former Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik said, ‘We grew up hearing what Sir Garfield Sobers could do on the field. A genius, an inspiration and a true legend of the game. The cricket community lost one of its greatest gems.
ICC Chairman Jay Shah is also hurt by the death of Sobers. He said, ‘I am saddened by the passing of Sir Garfield ‘Gary’ Sobers. A towering personality of world cricket and a legend of the game. His incredible achievements and immense contribution to the game have inspired many generations of cricketers. My condolences to his family, the people of Barbados and the international cricket community. In view of his contribution, the ICC named the Best Cricketer of the Year award in his name years ago. May his soul rest in peace.
