Story of Gangaur festival (Gangaur Puja Pauranik Kahani)
According to the story, once Shiva-Parvati along with Narada Muni had set out to visit the earth on Tritiya Titi of Chaitra Shukla Paksha. When the villagers came to know that Shiva and Parvati were coming to their village, the women of the village came to serve them. They reached Shiva and Parvati with the water, flowers and fruits that those poor women had.
Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati were very pleased and happy with the true Shraddha, service and devotion of the poor women. Mother Parvati, being pleased with the worship of the women, sprinkled the marital juice on them and said that the marital bliss of all of you should remain intact.
When the poor women returned after performing the puja, a group of rich women from the same village arrived for the puja. He had various types of fruits and dishes in his hands. Lord Shiva said to Parvati, O Goddess! You have sprinkled all the nectar on poor women, now what will you give them? Goddess Parvati said, I have given the nectar of nectar to those poor women and I will bless these rich women with the same good fortune as me. Goddess Parvati cut one of her fingers and sprinkled the blood from it on all the rich women. According to the story, the more blood fell on the person, the more happiness he got. In this way, on Gauri Teej of Tritiya Tithi of Chaitra Shukla, Goddess Parvati blessed all the married women, rich and poor.
After distributing the boon of marriage to the married women, Goddess Parvati went to the river to take bath. After bathing, he prepared Shivlinga from a heap of sand and worshiped it and also circumambulated the Shivlinga. Then Lord Shiva appeared from Shivling and said to Goddess Parvati, today on the day of Chaitra Shukla Tritiya, whichever married woman will worship Shiva-Gauri, she will get eternal marriage.
After the puja, Parvati returned to the place where Lord Shiva was seated. When Lord Shiva asked, the puja took too much time. Then Parvati said that she had found her brother and sister-in-law on the river bank, whom she fed with milk and rice. But Shivji understood that Parvati was tempting him. Then Lord Shiva also said that he will also meet Goddess Parvati's brother Bhavaj and have milk and rice. Then all three of Shiva, Goddess Parvati and Naradji set out towards the river bank. Goddess Parvati prayed to Lord Shiva in her mind, O Bholenath, please keep the honor of my words.
As soon as he reached the river bank, Lord Shiva saw a palace in which Goddess Parvati's brothers and nephews were there. Shiva and Parvati also stayed in that building for some time. After this, Goddess Parvati asked Shiva to return to Kailash, but Shiva did not agree. Then Goddess Parvati left alone for Kailash. Then finally Shiva also had to go with Parvati. Shivji said that his garland was left in the building and he sent Naradji to take the garland. When Naradji reached to collect the garland, there was neither any building nor Bhavaj, brother of Goddess Parvati, on the river bank. But there was a tree, where he found Shiva's garland. Naradji came with the garland and said to Lord Shiva, O Lord! What kind of illusion is this? Shiva Parvati smiled at this and said that all this was the illusion of Goddess Parvati. Goddess Parvati said that it was not mine but Bholenath's illusion.
