IPL Controversies: IPL is the biggest cricket league in the world, so even a small dispute becomes a big issue here. The IPL 2026 season has been in the news especially due to poor umpiring decisions. Recently, Jason Holder took the catch of Rajat Patidar, but even though the ball touched the ground, Patidar was declared out. This season, five such decisions of the umpires have become the cause of major controversy.
Controversy over Angkrish Raghuvanshi’s run out
The rule of ‘Obstructing the Field’ came into discussion when Angkrish Raghuvanshi was run out in the match between Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders. Mohammed Shami threw, but the ball hit Raghuvanshi even before it hit the stumps. The third umpire considered it ‘obstructing the field’ and declared Raghuvanshi out. There was a lot of uproar over this, but MCC justified the decision of the umpires in this matter and said that Raghuvanshi’s change of direction while running back was wrong.
Controversial catch of Jason Holder
Rajat Patidar hit an aerial shot in the match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Titans. Jason Holder took the catch by diving while running, but in the video replay it appeared as if the ball was touching the grass. Even when Holder was standing on his feet, he kept the ball completely on the ground. Despite this, Patidar had to get out and leave the field.
Digvesh Rathi’s foot touched the boundary
When Kolkata and Lucknow came face to face for the first time this season, Finn Allen’s wicket became a cause of controversy. Allen had hit an aerial shot on the ball of Prince Yadav, where Digvesh Rathi standing at the boundary took the catch. When different angles were shown in the replays, Digvesh Rathi’s foot was clearly touching the boundary cushion. Despite this, the umpires declared Finn Allen out.
No one saw the no-ball
Ground umpire may sometimes make mistakes, but it is the job of the TV umpire to correct them. In the match between Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans, fast bowler Arshad Khan had bowled a huge no-ball. Jamie Overton had hit a four on this ball. When the replays were shown it was revealed that it was a no-ball. The surprising thing was that neither the ground umpire nor the third umpire paid attention to this.
Was Heinrich Klaasen not out?
The first match of IPL 2026, in which RCB and Sunrisers Hyderabad clashed. Klaasen made an aerial shot, while Phil Salt completed the catch near the boundary, but the replay clearly showed that Salt’s foot was touching the boundary cushion. The umpire should have called it a six, but it did not happen.
