One such name that is echoing in the cricket circles of England these days is James Coles. When the England Cricket Board announced its team for the upcoming ODI series, a new and very promising name was included in it. The journey of James Coles is no less than a film story. He is the embodiment of Sussex’s player development partnership with the Oxfordshire Cricket Board. He completed his studies from Magdalen College School, Oxford. Coles proved at a very young age that he is a long race horse. He made his first class debut for Sussex at the age of just 16 years and 157 days. When he got his chance in the ‘Bob Willis Trophy’ against Surrey at The Oval, he became the youngest first-class debutant in the history of Sussex.

Journey from Under-19 to England Lions
In early 2021, Coles signed his first professional contract with Sussex. After this he made his List A debut in the Royal London Cup. Seeing his excellent game, he was soon included in the England Under-19 team for the home series against West Indies. After this he toured Sri Lanka and then also represented the England team in the Under-19 World Cup held in the Caribbean.
In the year 2023, James Coles’ career took a new turn. He scored his first senior first class century against Glamorgan at Hove. By the end of that season, he completely confirmed his place in the team by scoring two more centuries. When he was still just a teenager, he completed his first first class century. He got the reward for this brilliant performance in the form of a place in the England Lions team. Coles made his debut for England Lions in a four-day match against India ‘A’.
In the subsequent season, he also improved a lot in his T20 game. He played an important role in taking Sussex to ‘Blast Fifty Days’. After this, Southern Brave included him in their team as a wildcard player in ‘The Hundred’ tournament. When the Sussex team returned to Division One of the County Championship in 2025, James Coles served as the backbone of the team’s batting. He scored four brilliant centuries in that season and set a record of scoring more than 1000 runs in a season for the first time in his career.

James Coles is the best all-rounder of modern times. He bats right-handed and is known for his classic style. Whereas in bowling, he is a slow left arm orthodox spinner. England’s ODI team and series schedule
This ODI series between England and West Indies is going to start from July 14. The first match of the series will be played in Birmingham on 14 July. After this, both the teams will face each other for the second ODI on July 16 at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff. The third and last ODI match of the series will be played on July 19 at the historic ground of Lord’s, London, known as the Mecca of cricket.
