- China’s LineShine supercomputer becomes the world’s fastest.
- It topped the global rankings by surpassing the American El Capitan.
- It performs 2 quintillion calculations per second, 20% faster than El Capitan.
- This achievement shows China’s technological progress despite US sanctions.
World’s Fastest Supercomputer: China has become the new king by defeating America in the supercomputer race. China has reached the first position in the ranking of the world’s fastest supercomputer. This is the first time since 2017 that China has reached this top position. The LineShine supercomputer of the National Supercomputing Center located in Shenzhen, China has got the first place in the global ranking named TOP500. America was ahead in this matter for the last few years, but China has now defeated it.
LineShine system became king by defeating this supercomputer
In the new ranking of TOP500, LineShine has achieved the top spot by leaving behind America’s El Capitan. The El Capitan supercomputer is located in America’s Lawrence Livermore Laboratory and is used to develop and maintain America’s nuclear weapons arsenal. This ranking has come at a time when the competition between America and China regarding advanced computing is intensifying. On Monday itself, President Donald Trump had signed an executive order, which is being brought to take America ahead of China in quantum computing.
How fast is China’s supercomputer?
According to reports, China’s Lineshine system can do 2 quintillion calculations every second. This is 20 percent more than the American supercomputer El Capitan. This is the only supercomputer to reach this level in the ranking. This system runs entirely on general purpose central processing units (CPUs), which have fewer processing cores and cannot complete complex tasks at the speed of a GPU. Jack Dongarra, one of the organizers of the TOP500 ranking, said that through Lineshine, China has shown that it can keep itself ahead in advanced computing despite the export ban imposed by America. The export ban may slow China’s access to some components, but it has also helped it find domestic alternatives.
How did China come out ahead in this race?
Experts say that China, which has left America behind in the supercomputer race, actually wants to draw the world’s attention towards its chip design efforts. China came first in the TOP500 ranking in 2010. After this, its competition with America and Japan continued till 2023 and the ranking kept going up and down. In 2023, China stopped submitting its systems for this ranking. Now once again China has entered this list in a powerful manner.
