Online Shopping Fraud: Cases of online fraud are increasing rapidly in India, but if you get cheated, it does not mean that your money is lost forever. By adopting the right procedure at the right time, you can get your money back. Banks have a special system for this which is very important to understand.
What is chargeback and when is the benefit available?
Chargeback is a process in which your bank asks the merchant’s bank to reverse the transaction. This facility is not applicable in every case but only in certain circumstances. If the payment has been made without your permission, you paid but did not receive the goods or the product received is completely different from the one ordered or is fake, then you can apply for a chargeback. For example, if someone misused your card or you ordered online and it was not delivered, this is considered a valid complaint.
What to do to get the money back?
First of all, immediately contact your bank and declare the transaction as disputed. You can do this through helpline, mobile app or by visiting the bank branch. While filing complaint, take Service Request Number (SRN) as this is the proof of your complaint.
After this you will have to fill a chargeback or dispute form. In this, information related to the transaction like date, amount, name of the merchant and reason for complaint has to be given. Also, it is necessary to submit screenshot, payment receipt, email or order confirmation as proof. The bank starts investigation based on all these details and contacts the merchant’s bank. This process may last for a few weeks.
Pay special attention to the time limit
As per Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rules, you have to file a complaint within 120 days of the transaction. If you delay, your chances of getting the money back may be less. Therefore, the sooner you take action, the better it will be.
Where to complain about cyber fraud?
Along with informing the bank, it is also important to complain about cyber fraud. For this you can call the national helpline number 1930 or go to the official portal cybercrime.gov.in and lodge a complaint. Many times fraudulent transactions can be stopped by early reporting and money can be frozen.
Only right steps will get your money back
If you become a victim of online fraud, instead of panicking, take immediate action. Filing a complaint in the bank, providing proper evidence and reporting on cyber crime portal, all these steps significantly increase the chances of recovery of your money.
