What Is Special About Chand Baori Stepwell: Rajasthan is known worldwide for its grand architecture, its forts, palaces and temples are its identity. But among these famous places, there are some amazing places which are still away from people’s sight. One such unique wonder is Chand Stepwell, which was recently brought into discussion again by industrialist Anand Mahindra. Anand Mahindra in his post described this ancient stepwell as not just a monument but a thought carved in stone. He says that while people are attracted towards the famous tourist places of Rajasthan, this place has a different identity due to its geometrical beauty and design.
1000 years old amazing construction
Chand Stepwell located in Abhaneri village was built by King Chanda of Nikumbh dynasty in the 8th-9th century. This stepwell, approximately 30 meters deep, is spread over 13 floors and has about 3500 steps, which are built in perfect symmetry. This structure surprises anyone at first sight. Its most special thing is its design. When seen from above, the pattern of the stairs looks like an inverted pyramid, which creates a kind of optical illusion. This is the reason why people who see it get lost in its structure.
People come from across the world to see Rajasthan’s palaces and forts rising into the sky.
But one of its most remarkable sights does the exact opposite.
It goes deep into the ground.

Not just beauty, but also utility
Chand Bawadi was not built just for viewing, but it was a very useful structure. Water shortage has always been a big problem in the hot and dry climate of Rajasthan. In such a situation, this stepwell was an important means of rain water harvesting. Water was stored here and used for a long time. Besides this, its depth and structure also helped in keeping the surrounding temperature cool. In this way, this place not only served as water storage but also worked for climate balance.

There is a connection with films also
The beauty of Chand Stepwell is not limited to tourists only, but has also attracted the film world. This place has been seen in Bollywood films Paheli and Bhool Bhulaiyaa. Its glimpse has also been seen in Hollywood films The Dark Knight Rises and The Fall.
How to reach here?
Located about 90 kilometers from Jaipur, this stepwell can be easily reached by road. There is also Harshat Mata Temple nearby, where earlier people used to visit the stepwell before having darshan. Chand Bawadi is not just a historical place, but also a wonderful example of the thinking and engineering of that era. A hidden treasure, which is now being recognized again.
