Chaiti Chhath 2026 Date: Chhath Puja is a great festival of sun worship, faith, restraint and meditation. It is considered one of the most difficult fasts, in which the fasting person has to observe a strict waterless fast for 36 hours. The Chhath festival, which lasts for four days, begins with Nahay Khay. After this, the festival ends with Kharna on the second day, Evening Arghya on the third day and Usha Arghya on the fourth day.

Chhath festival is celebrated twice a year. Along with the month of Kartik, Chhath Puja is also celebrated in the month of Chaitra, which is known as Chaiti Chhath. The rules, methods and traditions of Chhath Puja of Kartik and Chaitra months are similar. During Chhath Puja, Sun God is worshiped by fasting and Chhathi Maiya is worshipped. According to the Panchang, Chaiti Chhath festival starts from Chaturthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month and continues till Saptami Tithi. This year Chaiti Chhath will start from 22 March 2026. On this day the festival will arrive with Nahay Khay. Chaiti Chhath will end on 27 March 2026.

first day (22 march 2026) Bathing and eatingChaiti Chhath festival starts with Nahay-Khay. On this day, people fasting in the morning take satvik food after taking bath in a river, pond or holy water. Bhaat of pumpkin, gram dal and arwa rice is prepared at Nahay-Khay. The purpose of taking the Prasad of pumpkin and rice on the day of Nahay Khay is to prepare the body and mind for the fast.

second day (23 march 2026) Kharna- The second day of Chaiti Chhath is Kharna, it is also called Lohanda in many places. After fasting the whole day, Kharna is performed after sunset after worshiping. Prasad of jaggery kheer, banana, roti (puri) etc. is eaten during Kharna puja. The 36-hour Nirjala fast begins after doing Kharna.

third day (24 march 2026) Evening Arghya- The third day of Chaiti Chhath Puja will be on 24th March. On this day there is a tradition of offering Arghya to the setting sun. This tradition is different and special from all the festivals. For Sandhya Arghya, Arghya is offered to the setting sun with milk and water in the evening near a river, pond or any reservoir, standing waist-deep in water. Besides, people also carry thekua, seasonal fruits, sugarcane, coconut etc. in bamboo baskets and soup to the river ghat.

fourth day (25 march 2026) Usha Arghya- On the fourth or last day of Chhath festival, before sunrise, Arghya is offered to the rising Sun God near a river ghat or reservoir. This is called Udayagami Arghya. Chaiti Chhath ends after offering Arghya to the Sun. After this, the devotees break the fast by observing a waterless fast of 36 hours.
