New Delhi. BCCI has made its stand clear amid the ongoing controversy regarding Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s international debut. BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla has openly defended the team management on this entire issue. Expressing confidence in the decisions of captain Shreyas Iyer and head coach Gautam Gambhir, he has said that this explosive left-handed batsman will be given his debut in international cricket only when the ‘right opportunity’ comes.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi created a stir with his stormy batting while playing for Rajasthan Royals in the recently concluded IPL. He scored 776 runs in the entire season at a record-breaking strike rate of 237.30. On the basis of this strong performance, he got a chance to join Team India for the first time. However, despite being selected in the team, he is still yearning for a place in the playing eleven. He sat on the bench during the Ireland series and then had to sit out the rain-affected first T20 match against England. The team management is currently relying on its established top-order trio of Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan.

No tampering with the winning pair of T20 World Cup 2026
The stand of the team management and head coach Gautam Gambhir has been absolutely clear in this matter. He says that he does not want to make any major changes in the winning combination, which has given India the title of 2026 T20 World Cup. The management believes that Vaibhav is very talented, but for now he should wait for his turn. However, due to this thinking of the management, captain Shreyas Iyer and head coach Gautam Gambhir are facing severe criticism from cricket experts and fans.
Rajeev Shukla replied
Amidst the increasing pressure on the management, BCCI Vice President Rajiv Shukla took on the critics while talking to ‘Times Now’. Shukla said, ‘We also completely agree that Vaibhav is a very talented player and he has proved his ability in the IPL. I have seen many comments against the team management and coaches, but I want to make it very clear that the final decision will be taken by the coach and the captain only. They are looking at the current circumstances and as soon as the right opportunity comes, they will definitely give Vaibhav a chance.
Shukla further said that there is no need to criticize the management on the selection decisions and the decision as to the right time for the debut should be left entirely to the people sitting inside the dressing room. He said, ‘Such decisions should be left to the wisdom of the team management. I don’t understand why such unnecessary statements are being made regarding this.
Questions are also being raised on captain Shreyas Iyer
In this whole controversy, captain Shreyas Iyer is facing the sharpest arrows from the fans. Critics believe that Iyer’s own return to the T20 team has been full of ups and downs. Shreyas Iyer’s performance in the IPL paled in comparison to Vaibhav Suryavanshi. He had scored less runs than Vaibhav and the performance of the team Punjab Kings under his captaincy was also much worse than that of Vaibhav’s team Rajasthan Royals. In such a situation, the fans argue that when the captain himself can play in the team despite being in less form, then why so much hesitation in giving a chance to a 15-year-old youth who has performed record-breakingly?
