The snow on the cricket field between India and Bangladesh now seems to be melting. Dhaka is now adopting the path of sports diplomacy to improve relations deteriorated after the Mustafizur Rahman controversy and Bangladesh’s decision to withdraw from the T20 World Cup. Bangladesh is trying to re-create an atmosphere of trust and friendship between the two countries through the Indian team’s tour to be held in September.

In fact, earlier this year, before the IPL, Kolkata Knight Riders had released Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the team following the instructions of BCCI. After this decision, tension in the cricket relations between the two countries increased. After this, Bangladesh had decided not to participate in the T20 World Cup citing security reasons.

However, now Dhaka is showing softness in its stance. Bangladesh’s Minister of State for Youth and Sports Aminul Haq has said that cricket can become a major medium to connect the two countries. He expressed hope that the Indian cricket team will tour Bangladesh in September and this will mark a new beginning in relations.

Aminul Haq said that the Tariq Rehman government is giving priority to sports diplomacy and positive talks have taken place with the Indian Embassy. He clearly indicated that both the countries want to move forward, leaving behind the incidents of the past.

Three ODI and three T20 matches are to be played in the proposed series between India and Bangladesh. Earlier this tour was to take place in August-September, but now it has been limited to September. Bangladesh Cricket Board has also started preparations by issuing tender for media rights.

Meanwhile, regarding security, BCB has also assured that additional arrangements will be made if needed. It is believed that this September tour will not only be a cricket series but also a big effort to bring India-Bangladesh relations back on track.
