It is not easy to differentiate between kidney pain and normal stomach pain, but there are some symptoms which help in identifying it. Actually, kidney pain usually occurs in the side of the back, whereas normal back pain occurs in the middle part. This pain is deep and persistent while the muscle pain subsides with rest or changing position. Sometimes kidney related pain can also spread towards the thigh or stomach. If pain is accompanied by problems like burning sensation during urination, frequent urination, bleeding, fever or nausea, then it could be a kidney-related sign.
What causes kidney pain?
Kidney pain can occur due to many reasons. The most common causes include kidney stones and infection. Apart from this, urinary retention, reverse flow of urine, blockage in the urinary tract, swelling in the kidney, cyst or injury can also cause pain. In some cases, serious diseases like kidney cancer can also be behind it. However, its symptoms are less visible in the initial stage.

Which symptoms are seen together?
Some other symptoms may also be seen along with kidney pain. Such symptoms as pain or burning sensation while urinating, frequent urination, blood or cloudiness in urine, fever and chills, vomiting or nausea, weakness or fatigue in the body, may indicate that the problem is not just related to the muscles but to the kidney or urinary system.
How is the treatment done?
Treatment of kidney pain depends on its cause. Antibiotics are given in case of infection, whereas stones may require everything from medicines to procedures or surgery. In severe cases where the kidneys are not functioning properly, procedures like dialysis may also have to be done.
