Why Conversation Is Declining: Today’s times have completely changed. Sometimes, in the evening, people would sit together and talk for hours, sharing their joys and sorrows. But now smartphones have taken that place. The situation is such that communication within the family has reduced. But are people really speaking less than before? The figures of the new study are shocking, in the era of smartphones the daily interactions of humans are decreasing rapidly. If you know the reason you will also be surprised.
What came out in the research?
A major analysis conducted over many years has revealed that today people are speaking much less than before. Researchers from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and the University of Arizona looked at data from 22 different studies between 2005 and 2019. It included audio recordings of about 2200 people. According to the results, the average number of words spoken daily has declined by about 28 percent. Earlier people used to speak around 16,632 words, now it has come down to around 11,900. The special thing was that the participants were not aware that their words were being counted, due to which there was less possibility of change in their behavior.
Most impact among youth
This decline was especially seen among the youth. People under 25 years of age are speaking an average of 451 words less every day, whereas among people above 25 years of age this reduction is about 314 words.
Change in lifestyle
Experts believe that our changing lifestyle is behind this. Now face-to-face conversations have been replaced by mobile and app-based conversations. Messaging and social media have changed the way we communicate. Earlier, the tasks for which people used to talk directly, like getting help in a shop, asking for directions or talking to neighbors, have now all become online.
What does the psychologist say?
Psychologists say that its effect is not limited to loneliness alone. The emotion, voice inflection and connection that occurs in a face-to-face conversation cannot be found in written messages. Gradually, the basic ability to communicate, such as understanding what the other person is saying and reacting at the right time, may also become weak. Another important thing has come to light related to mothers and children. Observational research found that when mothers use smartphones, they talk about 16 percent less to their young children. This means that excessive use of screens is also reducing important conversations with children. Talking is an active process. This includes paying attention to the person in front, responding quickly and controlling one’s body language.

Do women speak more?
The data also revealed that on average, women speak more than men, where women speak more than 13,000 words daily, while men speak around 12,000 words. However, with increasing age this difference also reverses. Experts believe that this situation can be changed. Small changes like interacting more with children, encouraging phone calls and staying away from mobile phones from time to time can help in this.
What did the expert tell?
According to study co-author Valeria Pfeifer, if every person starts talking to just one new person every day, this decline can be stopped. That means the solution is easy, we just have to make conversation a part of our everyday life again.
