The name of this feature is Lockdown Mode and Apple says that no spyware attack has been successful on the iPhones where this mode was on. This feature was added in 2022. How does Lockdown Mode work?
When lockdown mode is enabled on an iPhone, it limits the functionality of apps, services and network connections. Actually, it blocks the paths through which spyware can be installed. Apart from Apple, Amnesty International's Security Lab has also admitted that it did not see any cyber attacks when the lockdown mode was active. However, this does not mean that it is impossible to hack an iPhone. Apple says that this mode reduces the attack surface, using which hackers carry out cyber attacks.
What happens by enabling Lockdown Mode?
- Attachments in messages except images are blocked.
- Link previews visible in the message are blocked.
- Cannot receive FaceTime calls from unknown people.
- Many restrictions are applied in web browsing.
- Shared albums are removed from the Photos app.
- Wired connections are also blocked when the device is locked.
- Unsafe WiFi connections also get blocked.
- Many network protocols and services also become restricted.
How to activate Lockdown Mode?
Lockdown mode in iPhone is off by default. It can be activated in some easy steps. It should be used by those people who may become victims of cyber attacks due to their work. For common users, this feature makes using the iPhone a bit difficult. It can be enabled in the following manner.
- Open the Settings app and go to the Privacy and Security section.
- Scroll down here and tap on Lockdown Mode at the bottom.
- Tap to turn it on.
- Now the list of restricted features will appear in front of you. Review it.
- Tap on Turn On and restart the iPhone.
- Lockdown mode will be activated in your phone as soon as it restarts.
