Allahabad High Court History: The Indian High Courts Act of 1861 proved to be a major turning point in molding the Indian judicial system into a new structure during the British rule. Under this law, High Courts were established in the country in place of the old courts. In this sequence, on 17 March 1866, the way was cleared for the establishment of a new High Court for the North-Western Provinces, which replaced the old Sadar Diwani Adalat. This court later developed into Allahabad High Court, which is still counted among the major courts of the country. Who was the first Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court?
At that time, the first Chief Justice of this newly formed High Court was Sir Walter Morgan. Those appointed with him included Alexander Ross, William Roberts, Francis Boyle Pearson and Charles Arthur Turner. Many of these judges had already worked in the Sadar Diwani Court. Therefore, there was no dearth of experience in the functioning of the new court. Sir Walter Morgan was about 45 years old at that time and he had come to India after studying law in England. He also served as a judge in the Calcutta High Court and later became the first Chief Justice of the new High Court of North-Western Provinces. He worked in this post from 1866 to 1871. This High Court was established in 1866, but initially its work was conducted from Agra. After this, the court was gradually shifted to Allahabad and around 1868 to 69 it was completely established here.

What was the salary of judges at that time?
According to some reports, if we talk about the salary of the British era, the High Court judges used to get around Rs 3,750 every month. Whereas the salary of the Chief Justice was Rs 5000 per month. At that time there was no income tax in India, so the amount was considered quite huge.
First judge of Allahabad High Court in independent India
After the country gained independence in 1947, Bidhu Bhushan Malik was made the first Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court. He worked from 1947 to 1955. At the same time, he guided the judiciary in the biggest court of Uttar Pradesh during the necessary changes from the colonial period to the constitutional framework of independent India.
