- AI is useful not as a replacement for doctors, but as an assistant.
AI Vs Doctor: Artificial Intelligence is no longer limited to just technology but is rapidly making its place in the medical field as well. Today’s AI models are able to do tasks like writing, analyzing data and coding at par or sometimes better than humans. In view of this increasing capability, scientists are now busy investigating whether AI can take clinical decisions like doctors. Recently, a large-scale research was conducted in this direction in which AI and doctors were compared in different medical situations.
What did the Harvard study reveal?
This research was jointly conducted by experts from Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Its objective was to understand whether AI can do the same work that doctors do in everyday practice.
The study found that an advanced AI model proved to be more accurate than doctors in many cases. Especially in emergency situations, AI performed better or equally in decision making, identifying possible diseases and deciding further treatment steps.
Special experiment done in emergency room
During the research, 76 emergency cases were taken, in which immediate decisions needed to be taken according to the condition of the patients such as who should be given priority or who should be admitted to the ICU. Doctors’ decisions in these cases were compared to AI models, which included models such as OpenAI o1 and OpenAI GPT-4o.
After this, some other doctors evaluated all the answers without knowing which decision was given by a human and which by AI. The results were surprising, AI either performed better than doctors or was at par with them in every step.
Tested on data without any changes
A special thing about this study was that the AI was given the same information which was present in the patient’s records at that time. No additional processing or transformation was performed. Despite this, AI showed great accuracy even in initial decisions, which was unexpected even for researchers.
Will AI replace doctors?
Although these results are quite impressive, scientists clearly say that AI is not yet ready to replace doctors. This technique can work as a helpful tool, but it would not be right to completely depend on it.
Many times AI can identify the correct disease, but it can also suggest tests that are not needed and can prove to be risky for the patient. Therefore, the final decision and responsibility should still remain in the hands of humans.
What is the future direction?
This study definitely indicates that AI can become an important part of healthcare in the future. If used properly, it can make the work of doctors easier and patients can get better treatment. But at present AI is being seen only as an assistant and not as an alternative to doctors.
