KYC for Instagram: If you want to run Instagram, then soon you may need KYC for this. According to media reports, a parliamentary committee has demanded strict rules for ID verification on digital platforms. The committee says that there should be KYC-based user authentication for social media, dating and gaming apps. There is talk of bringing these rules for the online safety of women and minor users on social media and dating platforms.
Suggestions have been given to the government
It is being told that the parliamentary committee has sent its suggestions to the Home Ministry and the IT Ministry. It has been said that user verification should be mandatory for social media, gaming and dating apps. This will help in reducing the harassment caused by fake profiles, profiles made by copying others and profiles of unknown people. The committee has suggested that verification of users should be done on a regular basis and high-risk flags should also be raised on users who have been reported for abusive behavior.
For dating and gaming platforms, the committee has suggested making strict guidelines for licensing and implementing age verification mechanism. The committee believes that this will limit people's access to inappropriate content and misuse will also be avoided.
Suggestions came amid increasing incidents of cyber crime
These suggestions have come from the parliamentary committee at a time when cases of cyber crime are increasing rapidly. Incidents like trolling, stalking and now with the advent of AI, sharing of deepfake videos are seeing a manifold increase. In view of this, the Parliamentary Committee believes that these incidents can be curbed through methods of tracing the content. The panel has also expressed the need to make the grievance system stronger and faster so that complaints of online harassment can be handled effectively.
