- AI chatbots were found to be better than humans in emotional support.
- AI’s emotional support more effective in anger and fear.
- AI also provided better functional assistance and positive emotions.
- But human connection is better than AI, excessive dependence is harmful.
AI Chatbot Emotion Handling: AI chatbots are not only ahead of humans in calculations and data analysis but they can also handle emotional matters better than us. A research by Durham University and Manchester University has revealed that AI chatbots are better than humans in providing emotional support. More than 1200 people were included in this study and the responses received from models like ChatGPT-4o, Claude 3.5 Sonnet and Gemini 1.5 Pro were tested. Let us know what the results of the study are telling.
AI can handle anger and fear better
During research, it was found that AI chatbots provide better emotional support than humans in situations of anger and fear. These chatbots also helped users convey positive emotions like peace and happiness etc. However, in the situation of sadness, the response of AI and humans remained the same. Even when it came to actionable support, AI was ahead. That means AI chatbot was giving people complete detailed guidelines including breathing exercises.
There will still be differences between AI and humans
This study focused entirely on brief and written responses. The researcher has not focused on what kind of disadvantages can occur due to dependence on AI chatbots. He has also warned about replacing human support with AI. Durham University researcher Dr Sarah Walker has explained this difference very well. He said that AI chatbot can advise you to take a walk, but any of your friend or other person can go with you on that walk. It will be there and continue to help you even after the conversation is over, whereas this is not the case with chatbots.
Dependence on AI can be dangerous
Even though AI is making our work easier and has left humans behind in many cases, dependence on it can be dangerous. Some time ago, another research revealed that people dependent on AI chatbots are not able to learn new things and they do not have full confidence in their knowledge. That means, the more you become dependent on AI, the more your brain will have to pay for it.
